Scholarships in the UK

Studying abroad in the UK is an excellent opportunity. You will be assured of some of the best higher education in the world. World-class education does not come at a cheaper cost, and so many international students need some form of financial aid to fully or partially cover their study and living costs in the UK.

The competition for scholarships is very high and often has stringent eligibility criteria. Academic history is considered an important criterion. So if you can prove you’re a top student with impressive study achievements, you should apply for a scholarship in the UK. If you perform thorough research, meet the eligibility criteria and craft a strong application you stand a great chance of securing a scholarship.

The vast majority of these scholarships are for postgraduates rather than undergraduate degrees. Undergraduate scholarships, bursaries and fee waivers are available, but are less common – your best option is to scout out individual universities which provide these.

Applications for scholarships vary. In most cases, they will involve an application form. Some might ask you to complete a written test and attend an interview as well. Scholarships come in all shapes and sizes. They also come from a surprising amount of sources. There are three main types you need to know and explore:

• Global scholarships – These are broader scholarships. Global scholarships are not tied to a specific country or university. However, they’re not open to everyone and still have strict eligibility criteria.
• Country-specific scholarships – These scholarships for students are given to those from a specific country.
• University scholarships – A lot of UK universities offer scholarships and financial support for international students coming to study at their institutions.

After Graduation, What’s Next?

International students who have completed an undergraduate or master’s degree can apply to stay in the UK for up to two years after their studies. PhD graduates can put in their application to stay for up to three years.

International students must find a suitable job with a minimum salary of around £20,800 per annum for a Tier 2 Visa license. Also, those pursuing their PhD in the UK are further allowed to stay up to 12 months or a year after completing their degree.

Once the UK work permit expires after 2 years, students or candidates who are ready and want to stay longer in the UK have to apply for a skilled work Visa or a general work visa, i.e. the Tier 2 Visa. 

UK Post Study Visa Basic Requirements

To apply for a Graduate Visa to continue your stay in the UK for two more years after completing your education, you need to fulfill certain pre-requisites of the UK post-study work visa, which are as follows:

• You must be a degree holder from a recognised institution of higher education, be it a diploma or an undergraduate, postgraduate or doctoral degree.
• You must be financially independent without the requirement of any monetary aid.
• The application for the visa must be submitted within 12 months of completion of the program.
• You ought to look for employment opportunities in the 12 months.
• Those of you who would not have completed their degree in the English language would be required to take up IELTS. There will be four components in the exam and you need to score within the band of 6.5 in each of those.
• You would need to have a source of adequate funding mentioned by the Government of the UK.
